Starving in Eden: Poverty in Alachua County, 1865-1877
Advisor: Dr. Paige Glotzer
Associated with: The University of Florida's History Department within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Timeline: Since Fall 2024
Description:
In this research project, I am working under UF history professor Dr. Paige Glotzer to explore what poverty looked like in Reconstruction Era Alachua County, Florida, and how historical actors thought about and responded to it, especially in the wake of abolition and the Civil War. Using as-of-yet unanalyzed primary source documents, including Freedmen's Bureau and local court records, I will examine how Alachua's history shifted during this time and how those shifts shaped Florida and U.S. history, even to this day. Dr. Glotzer will regularly examine my research, offer guidance on secondary and primary source options, and critique conclusions I draw throughout the writing process.
